Satin Balls Recipe

How to put Weight on your Dog

Some Doodles and Poodles can be really picky eaters and a challenge to keep weight on! So in these cases, I’ll say… Bring out the….. Satin Balls!

“Satin Balls” have historically been a popular recipe amongst dog breeders and show dog owners alike and have been used to help put weight on their dogs “quickly” (or as needed).

Satin balls can also add a bit of that extra shine to their coats, a boost in their step, and a BIG smile on their LIPS!

Satin Balls for dogs are often given to undernourished dogs in animal shelters.

However, they can also make great treats for other canines, such as:

  • Dogs with low appetite
  • Underweight working dogs
  • Show dogs that are required to hit a certain weight for competitions
  • Canines suffering from muscle wasting or weight loss due to an illness
  • Nursing and whelping mother dogs

Satin balls are meant to be weight-gain dog snacks, so using them as meal replacements is highly discouraged.

They do not contain a well-balanced formulation of nutrients and may cause nutritional deficiencies in the long run.

Satin balls NOT for Puppies!

Puppies don’t need satin balls.

Focus on providing your puppy with a well-balanced meal specifically formulated for their age.

Add your own ingredients to your Satin Balls for example –

How many satin balls to feed a dog?

Adding any new food to your dog’s diet should be done gradually.

Start with just one Satin Ball a day to see how well they can digest them first.

  • Small dogs up to 30 lbs – 1 satin ball per day

  • Medium dogs 30-50 lbs – 1-2 satin balls daily

  • Large Breeds 55-95+ lbs – 3-4 Balls Daily

Ideally, your dog will put weight on within the first week. If this does not happen, you can increase their intake of satin balls. Satin Balls should be used solely for weight gain.

Satin Balls are not a long-term solution and are NOT considered a balanced diet for canines.

Homemade Weight Gainer Recipe for Dogs!

Total Time: 15 minutes

Yield: about 16 slices 1x

Category: Weight Gain Method: No-Bake Cuisine: Dog Food

INGREDIENTS

  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 1/2 pound browned ground beef (15-20% fat)
  • 1 cup of kibble (ground)

INSTRUCTIONS

Place all of the ingredients in a medium-sized bowl. Knead them together to form a dough. You can add more crushed kibble if necessary to make a dry dough.

Place the mixture on wax paper and form into a log. Serve slices as a treat between meals or as a food topper with their regular diet. If your dog begins to have loose stool, cut down the serving size and introduce this food more gradually.

DISCLAIMER: If your dog has allergies to any of the ingredients, obviously don’t use them. You can substitute ingredients. Please consult your veterinarian or a canine nutrition consultant if you have questions about whether or not these recipes are appropriate for YOUR DOG.

More Options for Weight Gain – Meal Toppers!

You can also use a meal topper like Stella and Chewy’s dehydrated chicken meal toppers mixed in with their kibble and warm water.
This one is JUST chicken and beef freeze-dried whole pieces. They also sell patties. This helps to make their dog food more appealing while also adding more calories.

Another option is the Honest Kitchen Raw dehydrated dog food... which makes a mush you can mix in with warm water and your dogs kibble.  Even my picky girls will lick the bowl clean!

Is My Dog a Fat or Fit Dog?

The best way to tell if your dog is overweight or obese is with a weigh-in at your veterinarian. Your vet can then tell you whether your dog is overweight according to your dog’s size and breed. Remember that a healthy weight will look different for every breed. For example, most sighthounds should have visible ribs.

You can also do a quick physical check on your pet’s rib cage.

  • If you feel a small layer of fat but you can still easily feel their ribs, they’re probably at a healthy weight but if you need to press hard to feel for their ribs, they’re most likely overweight!
  • If their ribs or hip bones unnaturally stick out then they may be underweight.
  • Your dog’s chest should be broader than their belly, and have a visible tuck-up from their chest to their stomach around their “waist” area (refer to picture below).

Our Fat dogs don’t live as long or as happy as our fit dogs!

You should see your dog’s waist from above and feel and see an abdominal tuck!!!
