Yes. Safe-Guard® 10% Suspension (fenbendazole) is a commonly used dewormer for dogs and puppies over 6 weeks of age. It is generally considered safe for pregnant and lactating dogs when used as directed. Always follow proper dosing guidelines based on your dog’s weight.

  • Safe-Guard is effective against taenia tapeworms but is NOT EFFECTIVE against Dipylidium Caninum, which is the most common type of tapeworm. AKA the tapeworm caused by fleas, double-pored tapeworm, or cucumber tapeworm.

Safe-Guard 10% Suspension has 100 mg of fenbendazole per 1 mL
Dosage: 0.23 mL per 1 lb of body weight (50 mg/kg) daily for 3 days

Dosage chart below for dogs from 1–60 lbs.
For larger dogs, many owners find the granules more convenient and economical.

Example: A 10 lb puppy would receive 2.3 mL once daily for 3 days.

Deworming Protocol – Litters of Puppies

  1. At 2 weeks old and 4 weeks old I use Pyrantel Pamoate dewormer to treat our puppies and I’ve posted a very handy dosage chart on my blog!
  2. At 6 weeks, I switch them to Safe-Guard and treat them every 2 weeks until they go to their new homes.

Breeding Dogs: Treat 10 days before whelping and each time I deworm her puppies during lactation. I exclusively use Safe-Guard for all my adult dogs and recommend you do as well.


Directions: The daily dose for Safe-Guard® Canine is 50 mg/kg (22.7 mg/lb) of body weight. You should weigh your dog to ensure you are using the right dose; i.e. correct gram amount and appropriate number of pouches.

Mix the daily dose with a small amount of the usual food. Make sure your dog eats all the medicated food. You may need to moisten dry dog food to aid in mixing.

Recommended Deworming Schedule:

The schedule may vary depending on the climate where you live and the outdoor activities of your dog. The following schedule should be used as a general guideline.

  • Weaned pups (6-8 weeks of age) should be dewormed at 6, 8, 10, and 12 weeks old.
  • Treat the dam and any other dogs on the property at the same time as the puppies.
  • All Dogs over 6 months of age should be dewormed at least twice a year.

Symptoms of an allergic reaction to Fenbendazole

The symptoms of an allergic reaction to Fenbendazole can include:

  1. Hives
  2. Facial swelling
  3. Itchy skin
  4. Trouble breathing
  5. Lethargy
  6. Collapse

These allergic reactions are rare but can be serious if they occur. If you notice any of these symptoms after taking Fenbendazole, it’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention.
